Changing New York: “Ether, Or”
Extend through sky, lengthen over what is land here: the architectural strictures of New York City: compression, censure, binding… The installation brings spacious opening and language- the installation changes New York. On the 22nd floor skyscraper terrace of 295 Madison, at 41st Street, is an art installation created by Columbia Fiero, poly-mesh of wide to fine weave, acrylic-painted, and strung with nylon cord. The dimensions of “Ether, Or” are 22 feet wide, facing East 41st St. on the north, and 33 feet long, to the east is Park Avenue, and Madison Avenue to the west: it is strewn and extended up 14 feet in depth.
Seek to bring attention to the spaces we are in, to our connectedness to the outside, to the knowledge of our existence, and to hold the conversation with eternity. Yes, to bring attention to the innate memory of the relationship of all beings to earth and to universe. Water and air: the drought, the fires, the heat, the floods, the rising sea—this is not only known here, New York, but California, the west coast, New Mexico, to Minnesota, the destruction of heat. The installation changes the space, changes the geometry of the space, and the hardness of the concrete surreal environment: brings the circle into our conversation –sweetness of brushstroke. Is it thingness, the undefined that is the essence of image and body of fire, to water, to fire, to air, the permutations of “Ether, Or”. Hot yellow-red to blue pale and deep cobalts, to water and space that continues…. Reaches to sky. Interrupts the geometry with parabolic curves that tell. Flames the fires on earth, zig-zag of flames, short sharp vectors. Long blue, rivers of blue, waters flow lines into the scape.
I am a multi-media artist – I create outdoor, indoor painted installations, as well 3-D constructed paintings and collages. I earned knowledge working, painting on theater and film sets in NYC, as USA-Local 829 member. I live and work in New York City, with travels interspersed throughout, some to the far reaches of Asia: India, VietNam, China, and to the detail of these United States. Having shown with galleries inclusive Five Myles in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY, and the Asian American Art Centre on the Bowery in New York’s Chinatown, I am honored with being welcomed to expand the language of the art to this New York City skyscraper’s terrace.
“Ether, Or” is available to be seen, by Appointment or for public viewing on selected dates, beginning May 19 and onwards to October 31, 2022. Please contact: Columbia Fiero
